Ruled by payment arrangements, cards are one of the most used payment methods in the world, allowing people to perform face-to-face and e-commerce transactions in a simple way.

Dock accounts must have an associated card (virtual or physical) to allow the generation of business transactions, otherwise, we do not have enough information to manage the account. That being said, accounts without cards are not allowed to perform transactions.

1) Contactless Feature: This symbol means that the card is able to perform contactless payments, which allows the payment by physical proximity (not only inserting the card in a card machine).

2) Card Security Code (CSC) or Card Verification Value (CVV):
This is a card security code, composed of a 3 or 4 digit number that generally stands behind the card. It is frequently used by e-commerce to validate a card since they never ask for the card password. For extra security, Dock has the Dynamic CVV product, which allows virtual cards to have dynamic CVV numbers.

3) Holder Name: The cardholder name is normally printed on Named cards. However, it is possible to create No Name cards, which allows the card to be printed without an associated holder.

4) Card Number: It is the number that identifies your card by following the ISO/IEC 7812 standard. Ordering this number from left to right, it is composed by:

  • Bank Identification Number (BIN) or Institution Identification Number (IIN): First 4 to 8 digits of the card. It is the identification number of the institution that issued the card;
  • BIN Range: The 3 digits after the BIN. It means the range of card numbers that a BIN can issue;
  • Individual Account Identifier: Variable number that identifies the individual account at the card embossing company.
  • Check Digit: This is the last digit of the card number. It is generated by an algorithm called "Luhn Algorithm" or "Luhn Formula", which calculates the digit to prevent errors in the number generation.

5) Expiration Date: All cards have an expiration date. After that date, the card will be invalid and it will be necessary to request a new one. This method is used to guarantee updated information about the cardholder as well as security to the card since the expiration date is used to validate e-commerce purchases as well.

6) Card Scheme Logo: All printed cards have the logo of the card scheme responsible for its issuance.

Cards Types

At Dock, cards can either be virtual (non-printed cards) or physical (printed cards).


Card Delivery Time

On average, cards can take up to 10 business days to be delivered.

Virtual Cards

Virtual cards are normally used to increase security against card data theft on e-commerce transactions. Since it does not need to be printed, the card is ready to use right after its unblocking.

For that reason, people can request a virtual card, perform the desired transactions and cancel the virtual card, guaranteeing that if the card info is discovered no one will be able to use the virtual card again, since it is canceled already. Click here to see how to get a virtual card.


Card Invoice

All Dock accounts have a single card invoice. That being said, all virtual card purchases will go to the same invoice as your physical card, even if you delete your virtual cards.

Physical Cards

This is the most used card type. It can be used to perform face-to-face transactions as well as e-commerce transactions. Physical cards can either be:

  • Named: Cards already linked to an account. Click here to see how to get a Named card.

Diligence Team

As to the blocking and unblocking related to fraud or money laundering, the Dock's diligence team performs the unblocking only through direct contact to the holder or by partner's confirmation. Therefore, it is extremely important to keep all customers registration data updated in the base.

Technical Details

A Payment Account may have more than one unlocked physical or virtual card at the same time. Although multiple simultaneous physical or virtual cards are allowed, each unlocked physical or virtual card must be linked to a different idPessoa, which can be created in the API POST /individuals/additionals (please see image below).

This chart shows that idAccount 75 (created through API POST /individuals/accounts) and idPessoa 92 were both created simultaneously. It generated the creation of idCard 22 (VCN, virtual card number) and idCard 23 (physical card) by the APIs below, respectively:

  1. POST Create Cards Virtual Card
  2. POST Create Cards Physical Card
idCard 22, 24, 26 (yellow): Physical cards
idCard 23, 27, 29 (orange) : VCN.idCard 22, 24, 26 (yellow): Physical cards

Afterwards, idPessoa 93, 94 and 95 are created by the POST /individuals/additionals API. Then the new cards will be created by the same APIs as the initial idPessoa, but using the idPessoa from the additionals.
